This
amazing animal is an adult female
DEAD LEAF
PRAYING MANTIS from
the rainforests of Malaysia. Their remarkable
body shape, colouration and pattern enable them to
superbly camouflage themselves amongst decaying
crumpled leaves, hence their common name! As
you can see below they really do resemble crispy
dead leaves, a superb example of camouflage.

Like all
species of praying mantis the dead leaf is a
predator, sitting in wait and using its keen
eyesight to look for smaller animals flying or
walking around it. Once a suitable prey item
is spotted and comes close enough the mantis
launches forward with its two powerful front legs,
capturing the animal using the spines on these legs
which you can see in these pictures below:

If this species is
disturbed or feels threatened it can put on a very
impressive display to warn off potential predators.
It opens its outer wings very wide to reveal a
second, absolutely beautifully patterned dark pair
of wings which would be very offputting to a
would-be predator, and it is a bluff designed to
scare them away!
