These attractive pale scorpions are commonly known as DESERT HAIRY SCORPIONS and they originate from the desert regions of Arizona and California in the USA.  They are the largest species of scorpion found in North America and can reach lengths of 15cm, making them very impressive display animals.

They get their common name due to being covered in reddish-brown hairs, which are really easy to see in these close-up pictures below of the female (top) and especially the male (bottom).  These hairs are used to detect vibrations both on the ground and in the air.  This aids the scorpions both in hunting, for their prey of small animals, and detecting the presence of potential predators.

These scorpions are able to live in really hot desert areas as they are nocturnal, or active at night, and they can easily crawl under rocks or burrow in the sand to escape the heat of the day!
