This
amazing looking beetle is a species of giant Asian
stag beetle which does not have a common name but
whose scientific or Latin name is
Dorcus titanus typhon.
He is just a few millimetres short of 9cm
which makes him the biggest beetle I have ever kept
to date! Whilst he is in some ways similar to
our own native stag beetle he is much larger, as our
stag beetle (which is also the UK's biggest beetle)
does not grow to more than 5-6cm in total length.

Whilst
his huge antlers might make him look a little bit
scary he really isn't at all and he seems quite
happy to be handled and photographed over and over
again! Despite this I wouldn't ever let a
child handle him as he has surprisingly sharp claws
on his feet and as a result a very powerful grip!

Despite
being undeniably quite large there are many much
larger species of beetles in the world, the longest
of which are the Hercules beetles which can reach
18-19cm in total length making him look quite tiny
in comparison!
