These beautiful animals do
not have a common name but their scientific name is
Haaniella dehaani.
They are a very spiny species of stick
insect from the rain forests of Sarawak on the
island of Borneo. This first picture is a
close-up of the face of a mature female, showing off
her unusual looks!
The picture directly below
is of two mature females, which as you can see are
quite large and very attractive!

These two pictures are of a
mature male which as you can see is really quite
spiny all over, and certainly considerably more
spiny than the females above!

I have successfully bred
this species so have been able to
watch them grow from newly hatched nymphs into fully
grown adults, which has been fascinating to see.
The ova of this species are velvety in appearance
and are quite large considering the adult size, and
look like this:

The picture below is of
four newly hatched nymphs, some of which grew
into the adults above! The nymphs are
relatively large for newly hatched stick insects
because of the large size of the ova. The nymphs
take just 6-7 months to mature, which as you can
see is still quite a large change in size despite
them starting their lives as big as they do!

My first nymphs hatched in early
September 2008 and they continued to hatch for some
time afterwards, because of the numbers of eggs the
adult females had laid over a period of time. When
some of the first babies to hatch were six weeks old
I took these pictures, which show the size
difference between a newly hatched nymph and one
which was six weeks old already!
