This
absolutely fantastic beetle is a male
HERCULES
BEETLE, a species
which in the wild is mainly found in the rainforests
of central and south America. I have named him
Hercules which, whilst unimaginative, seemed the
best choice!

You can
see from these pictures that the Hercules beetle has
absolutely HUGE horns! These horns are mainly
used in battles with other male Hercules beetles,
during which they will attempt to pick their
opponent up using the horns and to slam them down to
cause the other beetle damage.

These fights
are usually over females, which do not have the
horns and do not take part in such duels! It
is said that the male Hercules beetle is one of the
strongest animals on earth for its size because
apparently it can carry an object over 800 times its
own body weight!!
As well
as having very impressive horns Hercules beetles
also have beautiful elytra (outer wing cases)
as you can see below:

Despite
their large size and relatively heavy weight these
beetles can fly, but thankfully Hercules here seems
quite reluctant to do so. This is a good thing
because whilst it is undoubtedly quite an impressive
sight to see the flight of a beetle so large, they
are not exactly the most graceful of fliers and are
likely to bash into something (wall / window /
person's head) which would not be ideal at all!
