This relatively small stag beetle is a member of the genus Homoderus and it originates from the rainforests of Cameroon in Central Africa.  It is an exceptionally pretty beetle and despite its fearsome appearance it is quite harmless!  The oversized mandibles or 'antlers' are used in fighting, when two males fight by locking horns like a pair of deer stags!
