This gorgeous beetle is a species of stag beetle from southern India which, like so many beetles in the world, is known only by its scientific name which is  Odontolabis versicolor.  This species has an amazingly smooth pair of outer wings or elytra which look and feel just like polished birch furniture!

This is a species in which the eyes are very clearly visible whereas in many other beetles they can be very hard to see clearly.
