This
beautiful creature is an adult female of a species
of praying mantis from Mexico which does not have a
common name and is known only by its scientific name
of Phasmomantis sumichrasti.

Like all
species of praying mantis she has very sharp spines
on her powerful front legs which are used to catch
her insect prey, these are very easy to see in the
picture below!!

This species of mantis has
an amazing threat display, meaning that if they feel
threatened they will display their brightly coloured
wings to startle and confuse predators, as shown
below:

Because the colourful parts
of their wings are on the underside (unlike that of
my dead leaf
mantis
who has it on the top surface) it means that
they are actually facing the source of threat when
displaying, and they will repeatedly lash out with
their powerful front legs to further defend
themselves if required!
